Myself and a few of my girlfriends had been looking for a place to donate our things to. The key factor being they would take our clothes and give them to people that need them as opposed to merely reselling them at a low price.
“$1.99 is just still too much for a lot of people”- My friend
So for those that asked, and for those that didn’t, here is a great place to give your things to.
Side note: I have a great little pistils, kids, consignment shop I will be sharing with you in August! They are not taking anymore clothes until then, so be sure to save your fall goodies to resale!!

How it works:
-The Union Ministries will allow you to you give them all of your things (I had ladies clothing, baby toys, baby burp cloths and little girl clothing).
-Bring them folding in bags or on hangers if you would like. It makes their job a bit easier 🙂
-Ask for a receipt, if you would like one, and then your done!
*Once your gone, they will sort through the things you donated and decide what they would like to keep for the residents of the shelter. Whatever they feel they do not need or want, they will then give to their thrift store.
Union Ministries Thrift store:
5100 East Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk, VA 23502
Phone: (757) 305-9100

My personal experience?
- I had a trunk and two closets full of clothes to donate (shameful)
It took me nearly half a year to find just the right place to donate our things to! (picky picky)
Personal Disclaimer: I’ve always had this thing where in order for me to act, share, or sell something, I have had to be passionate about it. Hence why I chose to be a writer, English major, over a career that just made me lots of money.
Seriously, I literally cannot sell, show, or tell anyone about something I am not passionate about.(I’m a terrible liar).
Thanks to that little trait there, I ended up with a trunk and two closets full of clothes until I found the place I felt was on my heart to donate to.
The ladies that greeted us were as sweet as pie.
We brought in about 4 bags of things and placed them near the front door. After we donated everything and got our receipt, they invited us to say hello to the beautiful ladies staying their.
This short visit not only provided me with a location to donate our things to, but it helped me to be a bit more grateful for what I have. Not so much in the “things” I have, but simply in the PEACE I have. A place to sleep, a place to work, and food to eat are things I am THANKFUL I do not have to worry about.
With that said, it also revealed to me that I should be doing a bit more to give back to our community. The Union Ministries has fueled a new flame and I intend on getting our Polished Pistils involved! So be ready!! Fall 2013 and the year of 2014 is sure to be a busy one. And I’m not doing it alone 😉
“You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.”
― Kahlil Gibran
Ladies, yes you read correctly, they DO have a men’s shelter as well.
So for those of you looking to make some of your hubby’s undesirable pieces “disappear” we have found a great place with great people that could really use them!
Disclaimer for the statement above: We do not endorse lying, cheating, or stealing. HOWEVER asking to give away his favorite sweatshirt while he is watching favorite sports game? Totally allowed in our book! It’s for a good cause, and if he said yes, he said yes! 🙂
Stay Polished Pistil!
