Spring is finally here!! Not only do we get to look forward to warmer weather and cookouts, but also to a less stressful environment for our hair!

During the winter I wore my hair in a lot of “roll, tuck and pin” styles.  This ensured my hair was protected from the harsh NYC air. This Spring/Summer instead of wearing my hair out like I usually do, I decided that I will instead do protective styles! Things tend to pick up a bit for me during the summer, so having a low maintenance protective style will definitely be the way to go!

A protective style is any style that “protects” your hair from outside elements without causing stress to your hair. The key to protective styling is making sure that your ends, the most fragile and oldest part of your hair, are protected as best as possible.  Also, you want to make sure that your hair is maintaining the proper amount of moisture to thrive and grow. Popular protective styles are: buns, twists, braids, weaves and wigs.

For my first protective style of the Spring, I decided to do Havana Twists!

Havana Twists are probably my favorite protective style.  I love dreads and Havana Twists give me the dread look with a twist!  Havana Twists are also super easy to do and not too pricy like some other protective styles can be. While in the past I have installed Havana Twists on my own, this time around I decided to get them professionally done!  I called up my childhood friend Denetria and got the twists done.  The process took about 4 hours and we used 8 packs of Cuban Twist Marley hair (I have a big head!).

So far, I am LOVING my twists and have received lots of compliments on them!  As far as maintenance, currently I moisturize my hair every two days.  First I spray my scalp and roots of my hair with a water and aloe Vera juice mix.  Then I take my leave- in conditioner and pat it into the roots and length of my hair.  To seal in the moisture, I spray an oil sheen spray all over the hair.   When it’s time to clarify (biweekly) I will use ACV (apple cider vinegar) as I usually do to clarify my scalp and roots.  I hope to be able to keep the twists in at least 4 weeks but no longer than 6 weeks.  How long you keep a protective style in is completely up to you.

What are your favorite protective styles?!?
