5 Things Every New Natural Needs to Know

  1. Water is your best friend!

On your journey you will find your greatest companion to be water.Β  The key to maintaining a healthy mane is by keeping your hair moisturized.Β  Water is the only true source of moisture.Β  Any product that claims to be a moisturizer should have water listed as the first ingredient.Β  This may be a no-brainer, but make sure you are drinking the proper amount of water too.Β  Healthy hair starts from the inside, so DRINK UP!!

  1. Trial and error is the name of the game.

Going natural somewhat feels like you’re venturing into a world of the unknown.Β  The good news is that nowadays there are lots and lots of resources to help you along your journey.Β  The semi bad news is that not everything you find will work for your hair.Β  You will have to find what products, oils, styles and regimes work best for YOUR hair.Β  You will try things that do not work, and that is O.K! It’s all a part of the process.

  1. It’s not a race or competition.

It may be easy to find naturalistas that you may admire and use as inspiration for your β€œhair goals”, but know that your journey will be unique to you.Β  Never compare your hair or hair journey to someone else’s.Β  There are so many different factors that go into hair growth, the way styles turn out and length retention.Β  Don’t fall victim to seeing where someone else’s hair is at a certain stage and expecting your hair to be at the same level when you get to that said stage.Β  It’s not a race!Β  Be patient with yourself and your hair.Β  Set realistic goals that work for you.

  1. Things won’t always be easy.

With any new journey come adversities.Β  There will be times where you want to give up and go back to the β€œcreamy crack” life we all know so well.Β  However, most of these frustrations we feel are always temporary.Β  Even till this day, I still have days where I wish I didn’t have to take the 30 minutes required to detangle my hair before washing.Β  But I quickly remember that I love my natural hair and in order to keep it healthy and growing, taking the time to detangle is necessary!Β  When things get tough just remember it’s worth it!

  1. Have FUN with your hair!

At the end of the day we have to all realize, it’s just hair!Β  Have fun with your hair!Β  Experiment with it.Β  Try new things!Β  Do whatever makes you happy with your mane.Β  Remember that your journey is what you make it so make it FUN!!!

Stay polished and stay nappy my friends!!
