There’s nothing quite like sharing an intimate piece of yourself with the world and then having even one person love it, respect it, and/or feel it. My intimate piece?  The book I published in August 2016 called Stories of a Polished Pistil: Lace and Ruffles. Stories of a Polished Pistil: Lace and Ruffles, consists of poems, prose, and short stories compiled into three characters. The book covers love, friendship, heartbreak, spirituality, abuse, cultural conflict, affirmations, and femininity.

Yesterday I got a call from a very close friend. She purchased a few copies of Stories of a Polished Pistil: Lace and Ruffles and sent one to her fabulous cousin in Ethiopia. In the middle of my 9-5 workday, my phone rings and it’s my friend.

“Maquita, my cousin told me that I was to call you immediately and tell you how much she loved your book. She loved that it made her feel OKAY to be herself, okay to make mistakes and she loved that God was at the center of all of the characters. She said ‘it’s the best poetry I’ve ever read… finally something I can understand. It’s a work of art. I finished the book in 2 days and now all of my coworkers are reading it too. Tell Maquita to [stay] on her [stuff] and get that second book out because I’M WAITING FOR IT!'”

Writing this post to simply say, THANK YOU.

Thank you to every single person that has encouraged, inspired, supported, and/or purchased this book.

Thank you for coming to the book launch:
The first book launch was a steamy event; steamy as in over 90 degrees and quite humid. Now that I think about it, we nearly risked getting sun poisoning for this event, yikes. Beautiful women and gents showed up so excited to be there and excited to share.  They shared their favorite pieces, got the inside scoop on why certain pieces were written, and even yelled out a  “Yassssssss” or two. It was so much fun! And what many did not know was that the first launch was held the day after my birthday. So thank you for contributing to such a beautiful 28th birthday. The second book launch took place in Norfolk, VA the very next day. Since I hadn’t reserved a table myself (oops), my friends did it for me without me even asking. I was surrounded, again, by beautiful women excited to be there. We laughed, teared up, finger snapped, covered touchy topics and shared; shared so much love. Anndddd I signed LOTS of books at both events. Thank you.

Book Trailers 1, 2, & 3:
Thank you to the talented individuals that helped me bring these characters to life (J’Nell, Joclyn, Anar, David, Justin, Juan, and Crystal). Thank you to those that have watched the trailers over and over again and thank you so much for sharing them.
Making the trailers essentially consisted of a group of friends hanging out. We literally hung out, all day. All but three of us had attended the same high school so this gave us an opportunity to reconnect and even visit our old stomping grounds. In between shooting we ate together, laughed together, shared dreams sworn to secrecy, pushed each other through hard scenes, and genuinely enjoyed spending time together creating this thing. This was one of the most beautiful things I’ve had the pleasure of putting together.
Be sure to watch those further below! Seriously  you’re cheating yourself if you do not.
